Tender Lumplings Everywhere, Life's No Fun Without A Good Scare [Open to All]

 photo spookydream_zps6b871cec.jpeg

The woods are dark and deep, but not particularly lovely. If anything, they feel dangerous, as if something terrible might come lurching out from behind any given tree and tear into the nearest warm body. What that terrible thing might be is anyone's guess. A cat with hands? Slenderman? Stegosaurus? Actual cannibal Shia LaBeouf? All of the above in a horrible mob? It's anyone's guess. But every dreamer will be absolutely convinced that there is something unspeakable out there, and that it's after them.

The dreamers have two things on their side. The first is that there is actually nothing dangerous lurking in these woods (with the possible exception of other dreamers). The pervasive terror the dreamers are feeling is just that: a rift-given feeling, nothing more and nothing less. That snapping twig or rustle in the undergrowth is almost certainly just a squirrel or something else equally harmless.

The second is that no dreamer is alone. They all will be reunited with - or introduced to - their dæmons, a source of comfort in this dark, intimidating wilderness. However frightened the dreamers might be, at least they have someone with them who definitely doesn't want them dead.

[OOC: as ever, any and all are welcome! You don't have to be in the game to join the fun. Dreamers can remember or forget the events of the dream at the players' discretion. And the party only stops when you want it to; feel free to backtag forever.]

Topher gives Daniel a skeptical quirked eyebrow at Daniel claiming Topher's is a simpler world. Topher knows exactly what's different between his own world and this one. And, of course, that even just the existence of the technology at Rossum has a 97% chance of causing the end of the world, and that he may well helped speed it along. The thing that actually lets him sleep at night is knowing that even though they may not have guaranteed the destruction of the tech, they've surely done a good job in delaying it, and undoing much of Topher's damage. And there are still plenty people back in his home universe making the effort to continue doing so. They're probably doing fine without him. Topher was always much at making the tech than destroying it.

It's probably a good thing he doesn't actually have time to ponder all this more than a few seconds, because he can't help but feel a little childish glee at Daniel rambling. And interesting stuff, too! See, this is why Topher was excited to meet him. Well, partly.

"Well, exactly!" he answers enthusiastically. "And that works on every level, too. You can find that same kind of microcosm if you limit it to just one country, one city, one family, one person, as long as you look close enough! The same kind of conflicts, motivations, self-preservation and self-advancement, it's important whether you're a tiny organism or a vast intergalactic empire. Like growth patterns; electrical firing between brain cells, growth of social networks, expansions of galaxies, they look similar even though they're on massively different scales. It's all complicated."

"And it's all interlocking, it's all, all interconnected, it's the butterfly-hurricane theory which one would think doesn't actually have scientific basis but it does, that's the brilliant thing, it's that it does." There it is, the familiar rush of language and hand-waving and the associated joy with being able to describe it, make it verbal, vocal, communicative. "Nature and it's, it's equilibrium being that it needs to enact conflict right down the cellular level, constant growth and change and code alterations and adaptations to those external changes, it's the building blocks, it's, it's how there are so many deviations of the same universe, it's how there is no central, prime universe, just derivations and copies upon copies upon copies of mirrors and parallels and layered existences. And it's because of the constant shifts in reality, it's because Newton's First Law, it's because stillness is not, not in nature's foundation."

Topher's excitement, his equal-or-greater magnitude of energy for this conversation, is exactly the kind of intellectual energy Daniel has missed so desperately since falling through the Rift. There's something vaguely Sam-like about him - no, not exactly, more accurately it's a McKay-esque vibe, the full awareness of his own depth of intelligence and a complete, utter willingness to prove it. He presents it much better, however, distinctly unMcKay-esque in the ease with which he can slip in and out of polysyllabic jargon with someone else, anticipate them keeping up, and leapfrog off their last points accordingly.

Despite the strangeness of it all, Daniel can't help but grin a little, perplexed but delighted to come against a similar-caliber mind.

Topher keeps nodding enthusiastically as Daniel goes on, while he tries to temper his internal excitement at getting to discuss this kind of thing with a sci-fi hero of his. (He doesn't do a very good job at quelling it.)

"And that's why it's so exciting to get to see some of the different universes, and meet people from others and hear about what their worlds are like, because suddenly the deviations become so tangible and real," Topher bounces off where Daniel left off.

"And the sometimes you get to meet people from different points in the same universe, or even time travelers, and you can see how things have changed in a world you haven't even been to. And.. the effects it has on people, how a minor change in something fundamental to the environment radically changes everything. Or the opposite! You have these world with magic and werewolves and Gods and demons and aliens, yet you find people, often humans indistinguishable from any of us, who you can relate to just as easily as if they were a colleague."

Unnoticed by Topher, Phonea has climbed back from her perch and is now enthusiastically interacting with Daniel's snow leopard.

"I mean, I've made friends here who are literally horned trolls from different planets, and uh vampire hunters, and literal biblical angels, and an immortal, unfathomable sentient time machine," he goes on, his gestures getting more extreme as he gets further along. "And I mean, we still have no idea what sort of long-term effects this will have on this universe, I mean it's only been a few years. It's like the Rift is just this giant extra chaos element, chucking things at the world to see what happens."

Seth can't help but raise his hands a little, in a gesture meaning something like 'we mean no harm', while Sephronia flattens her ears and crouches a little. Seth did not expect to be approach by two unfriendly looking wolves.

It's a bit of a relief when one of them actually speaks. Words mean a certain higher intelligence, not just instinct, and someone who can be reasoned with. Which means a very much lower chance of being ripped to pieces, or having to climb a tree to escape or something.

"Seth," he answers immediately.

"Sephronia," says the cat.

"We're, uh, friendly," Seth adds. He thinks they're being pretty obvious in their lack of aggressive behavior, but it's nice to be straight-forward and have it stated for the record.

Lucy hasn't been to one of these particular dreams before, so she was pretty baffled at first to meet a rather large swan. It had calmly introduced itself - himself as Helaku, and Lucy had decided to take him for his word, considering there are rather more pressing matters.

Namely being that the location they're in seems decidedly hostile. She hasn't seen or heard anything out to get them, but she feels like someone or something definitely is, and Helaku does too. She knows swans can be pretty vicious, but probably not enough to ward off what or who might be lurking in these woods.

So the best course of action seems to be to start moving. Even if there's nothing out there, they can't very well stay here, in the middle of nowhere. It feels pretty strange with a swan as her companion, but somehow not unnatural, and given it's a talking swan, well, better just go with it. Better to stick together.

Helaku can keep a pretty decent speed, it turns out, though it's a little awkward-looking when he's on land, and sadly there doesn't seem to be any rivers nearby. She can still walk quicker than him, but even if she ran, she's pretty sure he'd be quicker if he took wing. They haven't tasted that theory, though.

"Hello?" Lucy calls out at random intervals, deciding the chance of coming across someone who can help is more to hope for than the risk of something unfriendly hearing them.

Seth and Sephronia have already gotten used to each other by now, even though this is their first meeting and they don't fully understand what's really going on, except how they are apparently each other somehow. And they know enough to work decently well together.

He's still generally on edge from this forest, even though nothing terrible has happened so far. There's still that lurking feeling that something is, well, lurking. And since they don't want to accidentally stumble into anything dangerous, Sephronia keeps a little way ahead of him. She's got much stronger senses for this kind of environment, able to see, hear and smell much better. And she's a lot lighter on her feet, which makes her a lot harder to notice.

Then she stops suddenly, ears pricked, and Seth slows, coming to a halt. "What?" he asks in a whisper as she returns to his side.

"Someone ahead. I think a person," she answers just as a quietly.

"Well, let's go see who..." he replies, and she nods, then stalks ahead, much quieter now. He feels slowly and quietly - if it's a person, it might not be that dangerous, but then again, it could be Lucifer and something. Plenty of people Seth absolutely doesn't want to meet.

As it is, he can thankfully relax pretty soon. As soon as the young man comes in to Sephronia's vision, she relaxes and steps forward. "Johnny!" she greets to catch his attention, loud enough for Seth to hear in the quiet of the forest, and he grins a little to himself. That's definitely one of his preferred people to meet in these things. He speeds up to a brisk walk, not taking long to catch up.

Being stuck in a dark and mysterious forest quite possibly filled with danger is not new to the Doctor. In fact, he absolutely relishes it. Things are usually too quiet for him, so these kind of dreams let him stretch his legs a bit, even if only his metaphorical, mental legs, and run around a little and get in trouble and meet new people.

Especially considering the TARDIS has been very prickly about letting him out after that little incident with a certain violent archangel. Honestly, he'd barely even broken anything, and had gotten out of it with something as simple as pretending to drown. It had been a lot worse for quite a few others, and he's pretty sure he saved a good amount of lives from merely providing a distraction. He's been keeping a close tab on Lucifer related news since then, but thankfully there seems to have been no more murders or that sort. Either he's cooled down and acting perhaps a little more rationally, or he's had to stay low for his own safety. From what he could tell, there were some who'd been putting up one hell of a fight.

But all those worries are relegated to the back of his mind now. It's time for an adventure, he's pretty certain. And his companion is...

Oh, he recognises them. That shape is actually very familiar, even if it doesn't really exist, at least not in his universe. Which means...

Both him and the winged cat jump a little as they realise they can link telepathically. Ah! Well. He's seeing himself, then. The reflection they see in one another leaves no other possibility, really. He crouches down to pat the cat, which presses up against his touch, so they can communicate more properly and directly.

This must be some kind of dream where a person's essence, their soul for lack of a better word, is made tangible in the form of an animal. The Doctor can tell without having to investigate that while the cat may look cute and cuddly, it's a dangerous and dark animal, a lot more vicious and resilient than appearances would have it. Good.

And while this cat, Theta as it wants to be called, appears to have what most closely resembling a female body, it is, like him, not overly attached to that kind of definition. But since it seems to be the appropriate thing for the dream, might as well call the cat a she, just as the Doctor goes by 'he' out of convenience.

"Well," the Doctor says, once that's all settled and explored, and straightens up.

"Yes," Theta agrees, stretching her wings a little. "Let's explore."

"Agreed," the Doctor answers, and they head off in a random direction, looking for other dreamers, or perhaps something suitably menacing. The dream itself seems very intent on intimidating, but neither the Doctor nor Theta lets it bother them terribly.
eighth: (Misc | Running)

Something is most definitely coming, and it is coming at very high speed.

It's a short, wild-haired man, coat flapping in the wind, feet pounding on the forest floor, though a lot more softly and deftly than one might expect at this velocity. By his side is Theta, a large winged cat coloured like a red panda. As the Doctor leaps over a fallen log, as does Theta, a flap or two of her wings carrying her much farther. They'd taken almost no time at all to become familiar with each other.

There's nothing chasing them as one might suspect, nor do they even think there is. They're simply relishing in the exhileration of running and exploring, as much exploring as you can do at this speed, looking for trouble or perhaps a friendly face.

And then suddenly a very large man and a very large cat come into view, and both the Doctor and Theta skid to a halt, their latent telepathic connection enabling them to spot the others and decide to stop at pretty much exactly the same time. Theta uses her wings to break her speed gracefully, and while the Doctor looks like he might come to a graceful stop, he overbalances and falls right on his backside.

This doesn't particularly bother him though, and he enthusiastically grins up at their new company. "Hullo!" he and Theta say in unison, the Doctor keeping seated for the moment while Theta ruffles her wings a little to make them lay more smoothly.

Topher is still wandering out and about, figuring in such a creepy dream, very specifically designed to freak people out as much as possible, there will many people who could benefit from Topher's help in keeping the paranoia at hand. This is exactly the sort of thing he'd be completely and utterly useless at in the waking world, being scared of the dark, and large open spaces, and monsters, and rats, and who knows what you could find in here. But in the dreaming, the dark doesn't really bother him, because the dark isn't the unknown, it's just kind of black. And any attacks, provided they are carried out by certain overpowered celestial individuals for example, are easily avoided.

Phonea sits comfortably on his shoulder, tail wrapped behind his neck. He's not sure he would've pegged himself for a monkey type person, but at the same time, he can't say he's completely surprised. And least she's cute. Even if she's just as useless in this setting as he is. He only notices the presence of someone's mind close to him in the dreaming, well before he hears or spots them. "Hullo?" he calls, trying to sound friendly and not like a terrifying monster.

Sunshine is officially Not A Fan of this particular dream, Modomnoc's comforting presence aside. The darkness is a moot point, and she's figured out the mood manipulation, so she has that going for her. But an intellectual awareness that there's nothing to be afraid of (probably) doesn't stop her from jumping at every snapped twig and theatrically overwrought moan of the wind through the trees. Which means that in addition to feeling thoroughly creeped out, she's also furious with herself for feeling creeped out.

Not a winning combination.

Topher's call gives her a hell of a start, and she darts behind a tree without even thinking, like an idiot. Ugh, this dream is the frigging worst.

"Was that Topher?" Modomnoc mutters in her ear.

"Oh gods, I hope so," Sunshine replies before stepping toward their mystery guest with what is almost certainly undue caution. If it is Topher, maybe he can use his dream whammy powers to make this less of a tragic embarrassment. "Topher?" she hazards, fingers metaphorically crossed.

"Literal Satan," he puts in, and quickly starts talking again before that can become their next conversational lead-in.

"And it's unified, that's the most interesting thing," Daniel muses aloud. "It's, it's all coming here, isn't it? Well obviously not here but I mean, I mean Manhattan, it's all ending up there. The multiverse bleedover, it all ripples out and forms at one epicenter, one central universe, and that's this one. But why this one?" He's moved on from initial rhetorical excitement to the amorphous questions, the ones that can't be so easily answered, as is his pattern of thought. Almost unconsciously he starts pacing, repeating his own internal thought processes aloud until the intellectual inquiries build up. "It could be randomized, that's always an option, but nothing's ever completely random, is it? Truly randomized intervals mostly only occur on a very molecularized basis and this is really not my area of expertise."

Then again, if Topher's allegedly been watching his life on TV he would probably have guessed that already.

Oh geez.

Daniel's been bracing himself for the inevitable discomfort or pain or death since he first heard the rapidly approaching crackle and rustle of a large incoming object hurtling toward him only to stumble backwards with an aborted yell of confusion when the approaching object divides into two - a small man and a large winged red thing, no less. The man doesn't seem surprised at all, and nor does his...winged red catlike animal, which is more than what Daniel can say for himself or for Aliyah, who's now denying in fierce undertone that she'd made any indignant, distinctly un-snow-leopard-like noises or sprang gracelessly backward at all. She most certainly didn't.

The preliminary shock wears off mercifully soon, tension helpfully defused by the fact that the other man is smiling at him brightly, in the most un-malicious way possible.

"H-hi," Daniel gets the words out after a couple soundless tries, lifting one hand tentatively. "Hi."

"Heeeey, Sunshine!" he calls happily back, identifying her from a combination of her voice and the familiarity of her mind. He hasn't seen her in the dreaming in ages, respecting her wishes at not blundering into her private dreams or nightmares. Although it's not so terribly long since he's seen her in person, since he still comes by every now and then for some baked goods and a little bit of actual face to face socialising. It's probably done him some good, actually, not that you could tell the difference here - in the dreaming he radiates and cheerfulness much more than he's done in the waking world in a very, very long time.

She comes into sight soon enough, though he can't see her animal companion. Perhaps she doesn't have one? "You okay?" he asks, because he can feel the nervousness coming off her. He extends his shield against the dream's mood influence to include her as well, so that her emotions can return to being her own, rather than being unfairly affected by the setting.

"No shit," she mutters. "I don't remember getting here. And now you're here too. Did something happen?"

She's not sure she wants to know. If Lucifer's involved it's probably not good.

Okay, that's a cat. Like a big cat. Medium-sized big cat. Johnny realizes it's probably just another animal-soul-thing but he doesn't know who it belongs to, so he doesn't drop his guard for a moment, just stares at her, clutching his bite-sized rabbit.

"Uh, hi?" he says, then startles as the attached person comes into view. "Oh, jesus - Seth! You scared the shit out of me."

"Seth!" In spite of his good-natured berating, Johnny is relieved as fuck to see someone he knows who doesn't want to kill him, and Nova doesn't waste any time showing it. She wriggles until Johnny puts her down, and she immediately bounds over to the cat to sniff her.

Daine bristles a little at Peter's pronouncement; she's sick to death of folk telling her she can't fight things that might hurt her friends. Cascia is a bit more helpful, though, prompting Peter to list the weapons they'd need. There's nothing they can do about the darkness or the lack of holy water, but they're in a gods-cursed wood. Surely they can obtain a sharpened stick or two.

"Come with us," Coromotto says, turning to give Cascia a comforting nudge with his snout. "We'll find stakes. There's wood everywhere."

Daine already has her eye out for trees with low-hanging dead branches, which turns out to be most of them. It's more a matter of finding ones dry enough to snap off easily and thick enough to mean business. When she finds one, it's only the work of a moment for her to rear up, clench her jaws around the branch, and snap it loose with a decisive jerk.

"There's one already," Coromotto says as Daine offers the improvised stake to Peter, tail wagging.

And okay, he likes the panther, but even he thinks that's being a little harsh. "Hey, all right," he says, stopping with them and raising a hand. "Bagheera, Dr. Happy. Nobody wants to be here, okay? Let's just chill out for a second."

But man, being the sensible one is a lot easier when his own terror, irrational or not, is spiking back out of control. He turns to look behind him, for a moment certain there's something there, looming. There isn't, but that does not make him feel better.

Rush simply shrugs, as if to say don't look at me. He doesn't have answers to anyone's fucking questions, much less hers.

He echoes Johnny's first movement, glancing back over his shoulder, then starts doing it more periodically. He doesn't like the prickle on the back of his neck. He doesn't like it. But his breathing is not erratic, so Rush is going to assume he is doing just fine, thank you.

The assessment significantly increases his resolve.

"Do you think," he begins in a tight whisper, jerking around to stare behind them yet again, "that there is actually anything fucking in these woods? You're the first other person I've even seen." Not that he's been too tremendously helpful, mind. Daniel can probably tell that Topher has heard of Satan's presence as he merely inclines his head a little at the mention of him. He has kept a very wide berth however. After all, Topher met him that one time, or rather he met Gabriel's memory of him, and he has NO desire to say hello to the real thing. Nope, no thank you, not today. Not ever, hopefully.

"Oh, no, it's not all coming here," Topher corrects. "I mean, first of all, there's plenty of rifts on this planet alone, I actually landed in San Francisco before I came here. And there might be rifts just like this all over, in the middle of deep space or on random planets who the fuck knows where. But it's not just this universe. I have it on pretty solid authority that there's plenty of them of them in other universes too. Some connecting from one specific place to another, like wormholes, or some that are just sucking stuff in from wherever, like ours do."

"So what's the pattern, then?" He folds his arms, cocks his head, studies the tree trunks like they might yield some answers for him. "Why is it that some universes get matter pulled out and others get matter dumped in? Is it limited to individuals with consciousness, or is there more matter transferal happening that we just don't know about? Well no, okay, that's probably exactly what's happening, but how? Is there, is there a pattern, an algorithm, anything to decide which universes are the entry points and which are the exit points? Are they, are they fluid, ever-changing, do some universes oscillate between incoming and outgoing? Does this one?"

Daniel just keeps launching his theoretical questions, one after the other after the other after the other, regardless of whether or not there are answers. This is honestly not his area, something much more up Sam's alley, but it helps tremendously to have someone who is a) obviously highly knowledgeable about the subject matter and b) more than willing to discuss it.

Okay, alright, they are slowly looking less unfriendly, that is good. Though it is very difficult for Seth to really see wolves in a dark forest as friendly, what with how nervous this entire place is making him, but he is trying to remind himself that these are talking wolves, or at least a talking wolf with a friend, so these are not normal circumstances.

The question takes him completely by surprise though. He doesn't recognise the voice. How many people has he told that? Like... maybe three or four people, probably? And most of them know him well enough to recognise him more easily than that.

"Uh, yeah," he answers with a confused frown, lowering his hands a little. But all things considered, there really only one person it could be, he's pretty sure. "Daine?"

"Hey," Seth answers with a small grin, feeling suddenly a lot better about this situation, even though the lingering feeling that there is something out there stays right there in the back of his mind.

"Could be worse, yeah," he answers, giving Johnny a light pat on the arm as hello. Sephronia seems just as pleased to see the little bunny, crouching down to sniff it right back and boop it on the head with her nose. Seth can't help but feel a little instinctual worry about a large tree cat saying hello to a tiny rabbit - which Seth as first takes to be Yarrow, although he quickly realises it isn't. But then this is a highly sentient tree cat and the bunny seems quite happy to greet her, so it's probably fine. "How about you? Met any proper reasons to be scared shitless?"

"Which one of those do you want me to answer first?" Topher asks with an amused grin. "Though, yeah, some of those I couldn't tell ya," he continues, and starts to work his way through the questions. "The Rift both gives and takes people, but when it takes, it mostly seems to take people who were brought here in the first place. No clue why, except maybe the Rift trace stuck on them makes it easier for the Rift to pick them up again." He shrugs. "But it's strange, cause sometimes you get people who know each other coming through, right? Often from different points in time though. But the thing is, that's not necessarily the Rift staying connected to one place. Like I said, I got spat out through the Rift in San Francisco, but someone I know came through this Rift! I mean, that's one hell of a coincidence."

He crosses his arms, leaning back a little, but then seems to change his mind, uncrossing his arms and sitting up to gesture further. "And it's not just individuals with consciousness, we get all kinds of matter coming through. The interesting thing is that it's not just matter though, it's also consciousnesses. Like this dream! I guarantee you, there is someone presently in this telepathically linked dreamspace who is linked not just by the Rift but through the Rift, who are still happily asleep back home in their universe."
