"Coming," whispers Near, too quiet for the others to hear. Cole wonders if she can really talk to anyone apart from him. She's so small and fragile; he's already hard to notice, and he's so big by comparison.

She tells him it will be all right, which he knew, but it's comforting to hear it all the same.

"I'm here," he says, loud enough to be heard. "I'm Cole. I'm trying to find you." He creeps forward, reaching, searching carefully.
