The Tropical Vacation of Your Dreams

The communal dreams of Manhattan have been downright pleasant lately, haven't they? Here's another sunny day for dreamers to enjoy in their sleep, though of course the tropical climate may prove just a little uncomfortable for northerners. The verdant jungle has its own sort of charm, though, teeming as it is with all sorts of exotic animals.

Make that very exotic animals.

Those who arrive close by any of the old buildings or fences will see that it's been a long time since the humans that made them disappeared. Everything here was once sleek, shiny, and state of the art. Now formerly electric fences stand bent and torn, automated SUVs sit rusting on their tracks or lie smashed to pieces where they were thrown by some enormous creature, and the jungle slowly works to reclaim a mildewy hotel and visitors' center.

Whether one finds oneself in the formless jungle that was once paddocks, in the aviary that would have housed a luxury resort, or even in the halls of what should by all rights be the most heavily fortified hotel in the world, one is always in danger here. The barriers that once separated human from dinosaur have long since fallen. Here dinosaurs have eked out a new ecosystem, the carnivores not particularly bothered about eating herbivores from entirely different epochs…or, for that matter, the funny little hairless apes that have appeared here on occasion. Here one is always in danger of running afoul of hungry tyrannosaurs, stampeding triceratops, or cunning deinonychus velociraptors (they're totally velociraptors, yup). Enjoy the eye-searing venom of that strangely undersized dilophosaurus, by the way, as well as the toxic bite of the swarms of compsognathus. Or maybe the dreamers will luck out, and the worst they'll encounter is an indifferent, bumbling brachiosaurus or an unassuming microceratops. Who here is ever that lucky, though?

Welcome to Jurassic Park.

[Mod note: Same drill as always. All players and characters are welcome, current members or no. Characters will remember or forget any and all dream events at players' discretion. Death in the dream does not result in real death.]

"Yes, it was," says Johnny, and though he's still shaken with residual incredulity from the whole encounter, the absurdity of it catches up with him and he can't help but smile, sort of, a thin, faint imitation of the expression, like his face doesn't remember how. After a moment he adds, "A step up from my last dream adventure, though, I gotta say."

He even manages a laugh. It might be the vodka, but it feels kind of nice regardless.

"I say, Sadie, look there!" Frank says in hushed tones, and between pours. He deftly hands her a fresh helping of whiskey. "Unless mine eyes deceive me - and if so they're no doubt in some dastardly allegiance with my liver - that's some sort of little blue cartoon horse!"

Now that he's said it, this does sound exactly like the kind of thing his eyes and liver would conspiratorially concoct. "Do you see it too?" he whispers.

"Yes!" Sadie stage-whispers back, making a vain attempt to suppress her enthusiasm for fear of scaring the creature away. "Oh, Frank, isn't it adorable!" She knocks back her whiskey, which has the twin effects of dampening her mouth and undampening her enthusiasm, and it's in a significantly louder tone that she coos: "Helloooo, tiny equine creature! Requesting permission to scratch beneath your chinny-chin-chin!"

She refrains from actually approaching the animal, but it's clear from her posture that she's having a hard time holding herself back. Or perhaps she's just having a hard time standing still and upright, given her thoroughly sloshed status.

She's not entirely sure how to respond to that. That whole fucked-up thing with Zagreus makes her want to wince... but then he follows it up with the most genuine laugh she's ever heard him produce, and it's kind of hard not to smile in response to that.

"Just about anything would be," she says with cautious good humor. She's not sure if she should really be joking about it, even though he just did. Sobering a little, she adds, "And if you see that Zagreus asshole, be sure to point him out. I have pretty good aim."

This remark kind of surprises him. He's not sure why. Just that it seems surprisingly charitable, or something.

"Heh." He nods, digs his hands into his pockets as he shuffles along behind her. "Okay."

The first bit of whispering is quiet enough that Andrew doesn't catch the words, but he pricks up his ears and looks around for the source of the sound as their conversation about him continues. Spotting them, he opens his mouth to call and ask if they know where he is -- and why they're not ponies -- when the woman takes all his ideas about his innate dignity and stomps all over them. It's been a long time since he was last humanoid, and he'd honestly forgot that this body would likely be cute to those of the human persuasion. Face burning (and isn't that a neat trick, a blushing pony! A blushing pony wearing a wristwatch, even!), he gives her a sharply disapproving look.

"Not granted," he replies. "Who are you?"

"It TALKS!" squeaks Frank, almost exactly as delighted as Sadie. He recovers his composure in an instant, clearing his throat. "Ahem. Pleased to meet you, little fellow! I am Frank Doyle and this lovely lady is my wife Sadie. That back there is our faithful cabbie, the triceratops. I suppose we ought to give her a name, shan't we, Sadie?"
sadie_doyle: (coy)

[personal profile] sadie_doyle 2014-02-28 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
A talking pony! What a pleasant surprise! Sadie can't help it; she laughs. It's not in the least bit cruel or mocking: just pure, alcohol-infused joy. But when Frank composes himself, she has the good grace to follow his lead. It's something of a struggle, though, and she very much looks as if she's teetering on the edge of another giggle until her husband's question distracts her.

"Oh, I suppose we should!" she agrees, turning her attention to the triceratops. After giving their cabbie an assessing look, head canted a little to one side, she declares, "I think she looks like a Penelope."

"Right you are, my darling! What do you think, tiny pony?" Frank swivels back to the pony. It has hair! And a little wristwatch! What an adorable little talking pony.

"The what?" Andrew gapes as suddenly the hulking shape off behind them he'd taken for jungle foliage and odd shadows resolves itself into a dinosaur. "What?" he asks again, brain looping around to what seems to be a vital question. Just for good measure, he asks it a third time, voice dropping an octave as he looks between the two of them and tries to fathom how a pair of giggling humans got hold of a triceratops named Penelope. "What."

That it's named Penelope he doesn't question. He once named a vortisaur Margaret, after all.

"I think he agrees!" Sadie concludes with no small amount of boozy exuberance. She starts to lift her glass in a toast, notes its emptiness, and pouts. "Boo! Frank, be a dear and refill my glass?"

To Andrew, she adds, "What about you, darling? Drink?" After a beat's consideration: "Though I don't suppose you could manage a glass with those little hooves, could you? Perhaps - ooh!" She leans forward a little, eyes dancing. "You could drink straight from the bottle like a lamb! Shall I hold it for you?" After a moment's rummaging in her bag of liquor, she proffers a bottle of gin and gives it an enticing little waggle.

"Oh." Dana's face brightens, and she walks closer, glad to see someone (and be seen!) and to have an explanation for her surroundings. "Oh, that would make sense, I suppose! If this is a dream, then I wonder, is there some sort of important message for the community in it?" She considers the setting. "That's how the City Council would do the shared dreams back home, anyway, though I must admit, I don't know if I'm still there, or, well anywhere really."

A shadow passes overhead, and Dana pauses, looking up in alarm at the winged reptile circling lazily on thermals. "Is...is that a pteranodon? Or a pterodactyl? I was always a little fuzzy on the difference, but do you suppose that's what the dream is about? Emergency dinosaur preparedness?"

She looks back at Daine, and realizes a little how odd she must sound. Dana claps a hand over her mouth. "I-I'm so sorry, how rude of me, it's just I haven't spoken to anyone real in the longest time." She smiles. "I'm Dana, and it is very, very good to meet you." She nods earnestly.

Yes, continue trampling his dignity, by all means. "You've got a triceratops!" he blurts, refusing to dignify the offer with a response. "Where did you get a triceratops?!"
frank_doyle: (neutral)

[personal profile] frank_doyle 2014-02-28 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh, you know... around." Frank shrugs. "There's an awful lot of them around here! Dinosaurs, that is. Are you some sort of dinosaur? Because, forgive my ignorance, but you look rather like a small blue horse, and not any brand of dinosaur I've seen."
wildmage_daine: (excited)

[personal profile] wildmage_daine 2014-02-28 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
Daine gives a cheerful shrug. "I don't think so - well, I never thought of the dreams as having much of a purpose before, but I s'pose they might." Though what this one might signify, she can't even begin to guess. Dinosaurs have been extinct for ages in her universe as well, and barring the rift getting antsy - or Zagreus making some poor choices - she doesn't anticipate any showing up in New York anytime soon.

When she feels her new friend return, Daine tips her head up and smiles, calling out a silent greeting. She drops her gaze back to the other woman as she speaks, though, and her smile widens at how close their names are. 'Dana' should be fair easy to remember.

"It's nice to meet you, too. And don't worry; she won't hurt us. I'm…" she hesitates a moment, then shrugs again, though this one is a bit more embarrassed than the first. "I'm not sure what humans would call her, but she calls herself Windsong."

[personal profile] sadie_doyle 2014-02-28 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
"We called for a cab, and Penelope was gracious enough to assist us," Sadie says, as if it's the most natural thing in the world. Why wouldn't a dinosaur choose to befriend a human or two?

She nods in agreement with her husband's assessment. "And I don't believe they had charming little pinstripe jackets in the Cretaceous."

[personal profile] bluesuit_hoofy 2014-02-28 05:44 am (UTC)(link)
"I'm a pony," replies Andrew, regaining some of his composure. "At the moment. Obviously. The question is, why aren't you? Or Penelope, for that matter."
frank_doyle: (oh dear)

[personal profile] frank_doyle 2014-02-28 06:59 am (UTC)(link)
What a strange and alarming question! Frank has never considered this before, and he frowns intently at his gin.

"I... I don't know WHY I'm not a pony," he admits. He pulls himself together slightly and adds, "I suppose I can't much help it. We are the way we are. And I can't speak to Penelope. Or rather she can't speak to me. So my speaking to her would only do one of us any good."
sadie_doyle: (unimpressed)

[personal profile] sadie_doyle 2014-02-28 02:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, dear. Frank's getting that look he gets when he starts to doubt some fundamental aspect of his existence. Sadie drifts over to place a comforting hand on his arm and frowns as well, though hers is distinctly less introspective.

"Why should we be ponies?" she asks the diminutive blue horse. "We've never been ponies before, have we, Frank?"
bluesuit_hoofy: (thinking | hmm)

[personal profile] bluesuit_hoofy 2014-02-28 02:34 pm (UTC)(link)
"Most people who come to Equestria turn into ponies," supplies Andrew. Frowning, he adds thoughtfully, "This is starting to feel familiar. You haven't fallen through any interdimensional rifts lately, have you?"
frank_doyle: (excuse you)

[personal profile] frank_doyle 2014-02-28 06:22 pm (UTC)(link)
"Possible!" declares Frank. "Hmm, we did arrive here rather abruptly, didn't we, Sadie?" He turns his attention with equivalent abruptness back to the man-pony. "Is this Equestria then? Because the last people we met claimed it was called 'Jurassic Park'."
sadie_doyle: (ooh!)

[personal profile] sadie_doyle 2014-02-28 06:53 pm (UTC)(link)
"We certainly did - and in that dreadful, liquor-less kitchen!" She shudders at the horrible memory, which is surely as upsetting to Frank as it is to her. "I shouldn't have spoken of it; forgive me, darling."

On the other hand, she quite likes the sound of 'Equestria.' She repeats the word with no small amount of relish: "Equestriaaahhh! Oh, Frank, it's such fun to say!" Metaphorically sobering a little, she adds, "But could this really be Equestria and Jurassic Park and a dream? Two out of three seems a bit more reasonable."
wildmage_daine: (excited)

[personal profile] wildmage_daine 2014-03-01 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
If it's any consolation, Daine's not having a much easier time of it. It was much easier for her to sit up on Thunder's back when he wasn't actually going anywhere.

"Never," she replies, eyes shining. She pats the triceratops as he lumbers into the herd. Despite his earlier warning, she can't resist asking, "Mind if we get down? We'll be careful not to get stepped on."

It's not my herd that worries me, Thunder says, turning his head to fix one beady eye on Daine. There are predators here that could swallow you in one bite.

Daine doesn't really want to make Thunder too nervous, so she refrains from pointing out that she could stop any nastier creatures with her magic. Instead, she sends him a wave of reassurance. We'll be fine. If anyone unpleasant shows up, we'll just hop back up.

Thunder lets out a disapproving sigh, but doesn't belabor the point. "We're all right to get down for a bit," Daine says to Aly before carefully sliding off Thunder's back.

Aiden hums in agreement. Unlike Jodie, he has a more intimate familiarity with what Zagreus was doing to Johnny in that nightmarescape. And he didn't like it. Besides, if anyone is going to fuck Johnny up, it's going to be him, thank you very much.

She'd known the fence was tall, but she's still surprised at how high it looms above them when they finally reach it. "Shit," she says as she tilts her head back, impressed. There's no way the juice is still flowing, but unless they find a gap to crawl through, they're in for a hell of a climb.

"What if... we just follow it somewhere?" Johnny scans the horizon in both directions. "It's gotta lead to a structure eventually. If I remember the movie right." He squints into the distance. "Can Aiden get high enough to see anything?"
