Paper Faces on Parade

The residents of Manhattan will once again find themselves drawn into the currents of the rift when they sleep tonight. Once again, too, the rift is drawing in people from other worlds, both those who might one day find themselves pulled through in waking life and those who might yet escape its grasp.

Tonight, it seems, a celebration is in order. The ballroom of a country manor is the setting for tonight's gathering. Wood and marble gleam in the gas lighting, and a bar at one end of the room provides the, ahem, social lubricant some guests may require. At the other end, a staircase leads to a walkway that runs the entire parameter of the room, allowing guests to watch the dancing from above. While the party is localized in the ballroom, who knows what secret passages and hidden ways a grand old house like this one might conceal?

Those who appear here will find themselves wearing a disguise on arrival. Should the rift cause one to appear in a costume not of their liking (as it is fairly likely to do), an enormous wardrobe can be found through a door near the bar. In it, guests will find a seemingly infinite assortment of costumes and masks of all sizes and varieties ready for their use.

"Well I don't have time to be asleep then," Rat corrects. Shion is in danger and the destruction of No. 6 is so close he can taste it.

That's an attitude Daine can understand a bit better, and she looks at the boy with sudden sympathy. "Yes, you do," she says gently. "Elsewise you'll just be useless because you're so tired."

"I've got some bad news for you in that case," mutters Andrew, understanding the sentiment but not feeling particularly sympathetic at the moment.

He shakes his head violently. No. 6 is teetering on the brink and he wants to be the one to kick it.

And Shion...

He won't think of that naive boy.

"I have to go back!"

Oh, dear. He really is upset, isn't he? Daine presses her lips together in thought, then ventures, "What's happening in your waking world?" Obviously it's urgent to him, but she's not sure if it's so urgent it's worth losing sleep.

"You're still there," protests Andrew. "Probably, unless you've been sucked through and we haven't met you yet -- you haven't been sucked through, have you?"

Tact! Gentleness!

Rat huffs and tries to brush past them in search of an exit. He doesn't have time for anymore madmen in his life.

"Change is happening."

Daine frowns as the boy brushes past her... though she can't say she blames him, given Andrew's behavior. Redirecting her scowl towards Andrew, she gives him a light whack on the arm. (Well, that's what he'd told her to do, wasn't it?) "You're not helping!" she hisses.

Andrew flinches and turns to give Daine a surprised, innocent look. "Rude?" he asks. "I'm just trying to find out what's going on."

"So am I and you're not helping!" Rat doesn't bother to try being polite.

She's not sure if Rat's latest outburst is meant for her or Andrew (or both), and she flushes pink as some of her own patience dissolves. "At least we're trying," she snaps, hands on hips. "We know what's going on with all this dream business, unlike you, and if waking up is so dratted important to you, maybe you should consider not being short with people who could help you do that!" Honestly.

"What's happening where you're from?" asks Andrew, sobering. He agrees with Daine a bit, but her losing her temper makes him feel like being at least a little bit more helpful himself.

[plaguedrat]

"Nothing that matters to outsiders." Honestly. He doesn't have time for this, again and again.

"I'm looking for Shion and neither of you are him."
