Paper Faces on Parade

The residents of Manhattan will once again find themselves drawn into the currents of the rift when they sleep tonight. Once again, too, the rift is drawing in people from other worlds, both those who might one day find themselves pulled through in waking life and those who might yet escape its grasp.

Tonight, it seems, a celebration is in order. The ballroom of a country manor is the setting for tonight's gathering. Wood and marble gleam in the gas lighting, and a bar at one end of the room provides the, ahem, social lubricant some guests may require. At the other end, a staircase leads to a walkway that runs the entire parameter of the room, allowing guests to watch the dancing from above. While the party is localized in the ballroom, who knows what secret passages and hidden ways a grand old house like this one might conceal?

Those who appear here will find themselves wearing a disguise on arrival. Should the rift cause one to appear in a costume not of their liking (as it is fairly likely to do), an enormous wardrobe can be found through a door near the bar. In it, guests will find a seemingly infinite assortment of costumes and masks of all sizes and varieties ready for their use.

"Not always, but there's often funny ones like these," Aly says. Again, she twists over the familiarity. "I dreamt I was a crow once."

"A crow?" Cassie wrinkled her nose as she thought about that, though she couldn't help smiling. "At least you could fly. I love flying." Under her own power, but this girl didn't need to know that. "Does this happen to you often?"

And this girl need not know that Aly can already See it on her. It's fuzzier in dreams but she knows her eyes and training.

"Dreams like this? I don't know. I suppose."

"You don't know?" Now Cassie was getting a little worried. This girl didn't really seem to know to know what was going on, while still knowing more then Cassie. It was starting to freak her out more then the situation itself. "You've been here and you don't know?"

[aly_brighteyes]

Aly shrugs, playing indifferent and dense. Even in dreams, she takes care to hide herself in plain sight. "It's just the Rift, I suppose."

[thethirdwonder]

The indifferent and dense is just starting to make Cassie get frustrated. "You suppose again. Is there anyone here with actual answers?"

[aly_brighteyes]

"Not while I'm dreaming. When I'm awake..." She shrugs. "In New York, there's this rift thing. It just pulls us from anywhere and anywhen and gives us strange dreams on top of it all."

"A rift in New York?" Well, that was a start, she supposed. "Wait, pulls you from different places...so where are you from then?" If this was an alternate world thing, Cassie was going to be put out. Those annoyed her.

[aly_brighteyes]

"I'm from a country called Tortall." Aly looks distant, feeling only now the disappointment when she says, "You won't find it in any map here."

"No, I can't say I've heard of it." Cassie sighed and forced down her bubbling feelings of anger and helplessness. They weren't helping anyone and they certainly weren't this girl's fault. "How long have you been here?"

[aly_brighteyes]

"Most folk here haven't." Aly shrugs and pushes away any disappointment brutally.

"A few months."

"I'm sorry." She wasn't sure what she was apologizing for, not knowing where the girl was from, or for how long she'd been here, or her growing frustration. It just seemed like the thing to say.

"My name's Cassie, by the way. Thanks, for putting up with my questions."

[aly_brighteyes]

"I'm Aly. Aly Homewood." Her Darking necklace thrums against her skin, imperceptible except to her.

"New?" Trick whispers in her ear.

"I just wish I'd better answers."

"Cassie Sandsmark." She supplied, giving her full name in return for Aly's. She just had this feeling it would be better to be Cassie in this instance then Wonder Girl.

"It's alright. I can't blame you for something you don't have." She looked down at herself. "I feel a little ridiculous though."

Aly can. She does so prefer having answers ready at hand, even if she won't share them.

"I'd liek to say I've worn stranger, but I can't recall if I have."

"I have. But that was by choice at least." Not because some weird dream had decided to make her look like Cissie's goddess form.

[aly_brighteyes]

Aly nods, thinking the same thing, but those were magical suits and disguises. Entirely different.

"At least we'll wake up. I think."
