This is My Island in the Sun [Open to All]

The Rift wouldn't say it's sorry for the fit it threw the other day, because the Rift never needs to apologize. It is (mostly) perfect, and all of its decisions are well reasoned and just. Obviously. But perhaps it has fallen into a bit of a post-tantrum sulk, because this dream is milder than one might expect. In fact, it's downright nice.

The dreamers will find themselves in an archipelago of small islands - most only a few acres in size - connected by narrow strips of sand or pebbles. The surrounding waters are calm. Little waves lap against the shorelines, and no rising tide will cut the islands off from one another. The islands themselves seem to have been lifted from every climate zone on Earth and several from beyond. Some are tropical, some colder and home to hardy conifers, some mossy and boulder-strewn, some covered in multicolored sand and odd, coral-like trees.

Most of the islands boast some kind of manmade or otherwise non-native structure, be it as small as a bench or as large as a pavilion, though there are no houses or shops to be seen. It's more like parkland, just civilized enough for a nice picnic. Some of the islands even have little grills, and a sufficiently motivated dreamer might be able to rustle up some hot dog or burger fixings if they poke around a bit.

And they'll have an extra pair of eyes to help with their searching, because their beloved dæmons have returnedagain. Or perhaps they're being introduced for the first time. Regardless, it's the bi-annual dæmon dream party!

"...So you just opened all the doors down there. At once. As a distraction." And that...kind of confirms a suspicion that's been niggling at him. While he can't exactly disagree with setting the prisoners free, especially setting a particular prisoner free, he can't help but think of when he was a bear in one of ROMAC's cages. There could have been real bears down there for all this man knew, and Erik would have been set loose only to find himself in a crowd of other dangerous people and creatures.

But they didn't find Erik's body, he reminds himself. And they didn't find any evidence of Erik's handiwork. "Someone could've been killed," he points out nonetheless.

"Someone was," Rush says evenly, composed and neutral, revealing nothing. Arista lashes her tail once in apparent savage satisfaction, leaping nimbly off the chair to weave herself around one of his ankles.

"The objective was chaos," Arista repeats. "And we achieved our objective. We had limited time and resources, and a limited window to execute." Settling down languorously in the sand, she adds with a pointed, prim twist to her voice, "I think we did very well, considering."

"You know, I would have thought the point of sabotaging ROMAC would be to get the prisoners out," says Yuri, somewhat less enamored with this 'hero' by now. He did apparently have a hand in freeing some people who no doubt really needed the help, but he wasn't the only one with a loved one down there, and he wasn't the only one who stood to lose someone in the chaos.

"Who
died?" he asks warily.

[personal profile] lottawork 2015-05-12 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
"The 'point,' as you say, was the dissolution of an obstacle," he answers smoothly. "Though I suppose I see how that could be misconstrued. Ultimately, people such as you and me can benefit far more from ROMAC's absence than from its presence."

Arms crossed over his chest in apparent nonchalance, he shrugs with the fractional lift of one shoulder, meeting Yuri's gaze steadily. "No one anyone will miss."

Yuri's grip constricts on the arm of his chair as he leans further toward the pair. "Who. Died." he asks again, already leaping to the worst conclusion. He doesn't know anything about where Erik was or what had become of him -- what if ROMAC had taken advantage of him somehow, put him in the front lines of that conflict?

What if he's looking at his brother's killer?

He looks at him, steady and evaluative. The escalating intensity to the ground-out syllables is a firm indication of an interaction that would be adverse to Rush's goals if he wishes to continue to avoid attracting attention from other interested parties, which he does, and this leaves him with a very clear idea on how to best terminate this exchange in an expeditious manner.

"Inconsequential," he says dismissively, and pivots neatly to exit the way he arrived, Arista matching his steps with fluid synchrony.

Yuri flails his way up out of the beach chair the moment the guy turns to leave, but Penza beats him to it. The little dog comes darting after Rush and his cat, circling ahead to get in Arista's path. "You can't just tell us someone died and not say who!" she scolds Arista, who has so far struck her as a lot more reasonable than her human.

Belatedly catching up, Yuri reaches out to grab Rush by the shoulder and stop him from going. "Look, I just -- I just want to know if it's someone I know!"

The catch of fingers around his shoulders is not one Rush can tolerate and he spins around wildly and he tears out of the foreign grip and he backs away and he means to escape but there is a dog in his path and so there is no means of doing so so he turns from both because he must because he must because he cannot think in these uncontrolled circumstances.

His breathing has become rapid and shallow, and he cannot stay here. He cannot stay here.

"Don't fuckin' touch me," he snaps, but the words hitch out breathless and forced, thickened and slurred by the seed of encroaching panic.

Arista hisses at the obstruction, claws out and digging into the soft sand. Her tail lashes.

With a shadow of his former control, fear tempered by menace, he sets his shoulders in a firm, unwavering line of warning. "And I suggest you get out of my fucking way."
stronglikebear: (annoyed | seriously dude?)

[personal profile] stronglikebear 2015-05-21 06:35 am (UTC)(link)
Penza cringes away, thinking better of her 'get in the way' plan once it looks like the man might actually trip over her. She doesn't get out of Arista's way, though, just lowers her ears and tail and quietly, uneasily holds her ground. She doesn't want to fight this cat, but her eyes are on those claws.

Yuri withdraws his hand, fingers clenching into a fist he isn't aware of, much less intends to use. What is this guy's problem? What did he do in the ROMAC base that he's so afraid to admit to? Who did he kill? "Was it a kid?" he asks harshly, the words sounding alien once they're out in the air. "Was it a teenage boy? Did he -- did the person you killed look like me?"

Because yes, he's going to assume by this point that it was Rush himself who did the deed.
lottawork: (nervous breakdown)

[personal profile] lottawork 2015-05-21 06:43 am (UTC)(link)
"Do I particularly look," snarls Rush, ragged and uncontrolled and feral, "like someone who murders children."

He staggers back, nearly crashing into the fucking dog in a wildly uncoordinated movement, one hand clapped over his shoulder and his breathing heavy is it the same shoulder Fring seized and dug his fingers beneath and does that entirely matter and his free hand stabs a furious, trembling finger in Yuri's direction.

"I've never seen you before in my life," he spits. "You or anyone like you. And if I'm fucking lucky - " He twists sharply about and moves to get away as quickly as fucking possible, steeled and resolute, "it'll stay that way."
stronglikebear: (interested | insistent)

[personal profile] stronglikebear 2015-05-21 06:55 am (UTC)(link)
"I didn't think you looked like someone who killed anyone until you said you did!" exclaims Yuri, taking a step back from that violently pointing finger as Penza folds herself to the ground in a misguided effort to make herself a smaller tripping hazard.

She rises just enough to skitter around Rush and back to Yuri, going the long way around so she won't brush past Arista. "It was just a question," she whines.

Yuri's face feels hot and his limbs are trembling, and he can't decide if he's relieved by the vehemence of this guy's apparently principle against killing kids, at least, or if he's still outraged that the man won't just tell him who's dead and why and how and that he's acting like Yuri's somehow the asshole for wanting to know when he'd already said he was missing someone he cared about. "You could have just said that," he says.

He flaps out a dismissive hand and turns away fully, disgustedly, Arista hissing at Penza as she retreats. He quite confident that further discussion will predictably go very poorly and seizing upon preventative measures might not be the most elegant or informed decision possible but it is a solution readily at his disposal. He has been granted a rational out from this exchange and so he will take it.

The treeline is distant but rapidly approaching the quicker he nears it, and with any hope it will serve as the conversational escape route he has begun to desperately seek.

Yuri follows for a few steps, then stops. What is he even going to do if he catches up? But what is he going to do if he doesn't find out who the hell this Dr. Rush is talking about. With the Rebels taking over what's left of ROMAC, they should know all of what happened -- and the thought that maybe the higher-ups do know and haven't told him isn't reassuring.

But this man has killed someone, Yuri's pretty sure of that. He can't just...not look into it. Huffing in frustration and fully aware he's going after someone who doesn't want him there and seems unbalanced to boot, he and Penza go jogging after Rush, the headstart the scientist gained while Yuri stood in indecision enough to have got him to the treeline.
lottawork: (with THOSE shoes ???)

[personal profile] lottawork 2015-05-24 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
"Fuck's sake," growls Arista, and it is a tacit warning that Rush requires and so he spins on his heel and sincerely hopes that the look leveled upon the boy and his dog adequately communicates his utter disdain for the persistent pair.

"Fuck off," he says bluntly, the bite of the words flaring behind the grind of teeth.

And he was right, he has no idea what he was planning to do when he caught up. Yuri stops short and catches himself starting to duck his head in embarrassed apology, Penza lurking behind his ankles. He's not the one being an asshole here, he reminds himself, except he's not really sure about that and he's stuck uneasily shifting his weight from foot to foot as he tries to figure out what his nonexistent plan for this renewed conversation could possibly have been.

"Can you just tell me who died?" he pleads. "I mean, do you know who it was?"

"No one anyone will miss," he repeats evenly, hardening his glare with a pointed glint. Fring had not struck Rush as particularly personable or likeable, or one who would have a great deal of friends. Any who may have potentially fallen under that category likely perished with their doomed organization.

He folds his arms, a taut, locking snap of action. "I believe I'm under no obligation to tell you anything."

"Then why did you even bring it up?" snaps Yuri in exasperation. His face sets into a rictus of anxiety. So the guy says he didn't kill Erik. Yuri really, really wants to believe that, but he also wants to know if there's someone who is missing a family member out there -- because how is this guy going to know whether someone he found in ROMAC's basement has anyone to miss him?

"Please," says Penza simply, head low and ears back in supplication.

"A temporary lapse in judgement that I am now regretting, I assure you," he hisses. He does not wish to illuminate his involvement with Fring's death to any undue extent. Satisfactory as it had been and as certain as he is that Fring had no true attachments - he suspects that, like himself, Fring preferred the clarity of the objective mindset and would be loathe to jeopardize that on anyone's account - it would be wiser, and safer, and preferred for him to bury the incident with the rest of ROMAC, in the anonymous, nameless rubble.

"It wasn't a good person, if you're so upset about it," Arista breaks in with a frustrated flick of her tail, ignoring her counterpart's furious, pointed look. "It was deserved. Don't give me that," she snaps at the man beside her without lifting her gaze or her tone. "We have to tell him something, obviously, or we'll never fucking hear the end of it."
stronglikebear: (sad | rough)

[personal profile] stronglikebear 2015-05-25 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
It's a little late for that, Doctor Rush. Yuri wants to believe what the cat is telling him, less because he needs this man to not be a crazy murderer and more because there are enough people killed in the world without it being someone nice who died. "Did they attack you?" he asks, trying to find some out where he can just take what he's being told at face value.
lottawork: (don't fuckin test me | i'll win)

[personal profile] lottawork 2015-05-25 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
"Yes," he says in breathy exasperation.

"In a manner of speaking," says Arista in the same moment.

They look at each other.

"We disagreed," he clarifies flatly, eyes narrowing at the cat. "On several key points."

Arista continues to look at him.

With a resigned huff, he rolls one wrist and holds it up for inspection, the jagged scar running its way unevenly 'round the thin circumference. He lifts his eyebrows incrementally in unspoken challenge of that threat assessment.
stronglikebear: (sad | lost in thought)

[personal profile] stronglikebear 2015-05-25 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
"...Oh." Even at several paces, that mark is unmistakable as a scar. Penza lets out a low whine and turns her deep, dark eyes up at her own human counterpart. Yuri swallows and nods. That's not a whole story, but it's enough of one. It's definitely enough of one. "I'm -- I'm sorry," he says, stumbling over his words. "I just...um."

Just needed to know the whole story.
lottawork: (bruh what up)

[personal profile] lottawork 2015-05-25 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
"I'm sure," he says icily, the arc of his hand as it falls to his side communicating a disparaging, exasperated dismissal. "Y'fucking happy?"

Yuri's mouth sets in a perturbed line as he lets out a sigh through his nose. He's pretty sure it's not unreasonable to want to know at least a few details when someone involved in the overthrow of a massive government organization tells you they caused (witnessed?) someone's death in the process, but yeah, he kind of feels like a jerk now. "No," he mutters, then adds another awkward, "Sorry."
lottawork: (faceless)

[personal profile] lottawork 2015-05-25 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
"Good." He severs the word with a particularly satisfying click of teeth and, without even the barest perfunctory tilt of a chin, pivots neatly to make his departure. Arista lingers for only a hair longer, eyes searching and suspicious, before stepping neatly to join her counterpart as they peel swiftly away.

What the hell even was this conversation? Boy and dog watch the pair go, and after wiping sweaty palms on his jeans Yuri turns to go off the other way. He can't imagine just sitting back down and chilling out in a beach chair, but maybe they'll find some other island with less cantankerous inhabitants to take their mind off the problem of his missing brother.
