The rift has gotten bored, and has decided it's time to bring people together for another dream party.

This time, when you find yourself within the dream, you'll be somewhere familiar. Perhaps somewhere you feel safe or at home, some place you miss, or were particularly happy at some point in your life. It might not be the same place every time you come back here, though.

There will also be a door where there didn't use to be one, even if there's no wall to surround it. If you go through this door, you will find yourself in endless simple corridor, lined with unmarked doors. And if you go through them, you'll pay a visit to someone else's room.

... Well, this isn't right. Daine blinks around at the office for a few moments, Kitten still clinging to her breeches, until she realizes it's already occupied.

"Oh, excuse us," Daine says to the man at the desk. "I think we've taken a wrong turn somewhere."

"I think you'll find," Dirk answers without turning from his work, "that you are precisely where you need to be." This is, of course, an effort of Dirk's part to be vaguely mysterious while at the same time trying to extort money out of whoever this girl is who's wandered into his office.

That, and he'd gotten a little distracted by a splotch of marinara sauce that had fallen onto his tie, so was hoping to remove the no-doubt awful stain before turning to meet a prospective client.

Daine bends to scoop up Kitten before the dragon can get into anything and tries to think of a polite way of saying that she's certain he's wrong about that (whoever he even is). Something about his wording strikes her as odd, and she repeats, "Need to be?" She very much doubts that she needs anything here, but perhaps he's saying that she's needed. "Did you need help with something?"

"Fate has led you to my door. I very much believe you would benefit from my services." Leaving the tie as a lost cause, Dirk turns around and stands, stalling only briefly when he takes in the fact that the young woman is balancing a tiny fictional beast on her hip. "You and your...dragon."

Recovering, he flashes a grin at her, all teeth. "Dirk Gently, holistic detective. At your service."

"I'm Daine, and this is Kitten," she replies automatically. Kitten blinks at Dirk, then stretches her neck forward. The dragon's eyes take on a faint, silver glow, and she lets out a soft cooing sound before settling back into Daine's arms, her eyes returning to normal. The marinara stain on Dirk's tie has vanished.

Daine gives Kitten a reproachful look. Dirk might be familiar enough with dragons to know one when he sees one, but that doesn't mean he's comfortable with spellwork - especially when it's directed at him. "It was nothing, really," she reassures him. "She just fixed your tie."

Wanting to direct the conversation away from Kitten's impulsive behavior, she asks, "What's a holistic detective?"

"Ah, thank you." He fiddles with his tie a little, not entirely sure that he's comfortable with what just happened. But hey, clean tie. He looks around the room, as if MacDuff might suddenly reappear to pull up a chair, but no such luck.

He pulls over a stool for her and then pushes a few things aside so he can sit on the edge of his desk. "My methods of detection are founded upon the unassailable truth that everything is fundamentally interconnected. Through the layers of interconnectedness lie the truth to any mystery. My methods may seem unusual, but they are undoubtedly the best."

Daine sits, mostly because it would be impolite not to, and settles Kitten on her lap with a pointed, no more magic look. It had been clear to her that he was a bit unsettled by having his tie fixed, though he'd recovered quickly enough.

Far less clear is his explanation, and Daine blinks as the majority of it sails clear over her head. "... What?"
