The Fortress of Many Turnings [open]

Welcome to Caerdroia. Though at first glance this world seems calm, even idyllic, closer inspection will reveal a startling lack of linearity. A doorway in one place can suddenly lead to another entirely, the locals going about their business seem totally unaware of your presence, and you may find reminders of home that are less than welcome -- and less than safe.

The countryside seems almost designed to set one at one's ease. Gentle, rolling hills overlook a town in the near distance, and herds of friendly cows cluster here and there (with unknown intent).

The Garden of Curiosities is a walled-off park. Inside, streams and paths wind through beautiful landscaping, and animals can be found on the loose everywhere. For the most part, these creatures are friendly (or at least indifferent) toward visitors, though their appearance might perturb. One might see an animal one has never encountered before, or one might find the garden inhabited by creatures from one's own world that are somehow changed, whether in size, color, or behavior. And, of course, one might find something rather more predatory has taken up residence….

The town hall never seems to be in the same place twice. Finding your way through the streets to any one particular building is an exercise in frustration, as the town seems to shift and change whenever part of it is out of your sight. The hall itself isn't much better once you get inside; stairwells have a habit of appearing on the ceiling, hallways turn into dead ends while your back is turned, and floors are liable to open up into fathomless pits.

The Labyrinth is where many journeys seem destined to end. The way out is, more often than not, the way in. Try to leave one part of Caerdroia, and the doorway might very well open into the labyrinth. And, like any good labyrinth, this one is home to a Minotaur. And, like any good Minotaur, this one would be more than happy to tear you to pieces.

[OOC: Once again, the shared dream is open to all characters, including those not currently in the game and those belonging to players who are not currently members. Once again, too, players are free to choose whether their characters see the dream for what it is, whether they are forced to abide by its rules, and whether they will remember this in the morning.]

If Jennifer thinks things are awkward on her end, she ought to try his position. Aglet squirms and tries to brace himself, but mostly just succeeds in slipping to the bottom of the pocket. At least he doesn't seem to be in danger of falling out.

"Fair enough," comes his faint reply once he's got himself situated so he can see again. "I don't think I came very far."

She might actually prefer that to the constant, low-level anxiety of having a tiny person in your pocket that you could actually kill with one wrong move. Granted, Aglet seems to be pretty tough for his size (well, he'd have to be)... but she's still acutely aware that bumping him with her elbow by accident would be about as bad as her being hit by a car.

To distract herself (but not too much!), she says, "This would be less annoying if I hadn't come in through the front door. Things are weird outside, too, but at least I didn't feel so stuck out there."

He trusts her. If he didn't trust her, he wouldn't be in her pocket right now. Aglet is well aware how clumsy Beans can be and how badly he could be hurt even by accident, but he feels safer than he actually is while surrounded by all this fabric instead of riding in her hands.

"And you tried going back the way you came?" Aglet's not trying to be sarcastic or critical; this is a thing he's had trouble with himself.

"More than once," she confirms, frowning. "But I kept getting turned around. I walked in a straight line for ten minutes and passed the same radiator twice - I could tell because the beast took a chunk out of it the first time." Fortunately, it hadn't been on. She'd felt a bit bad about the damage at first, but now, she's considering allowing the Quarkbeast to sample any and all metal they pass for the sake of marking their trail.

"I don't like how it does that," notes Aglet honestly. He can't see the Quarkbeast from where he is right now, but just being near it makes him uneasy. He keeps imagining it shredding his bookcase until it falls down and the Quarkbeast can eat him. He's sure it has it in for him; while it doesn't look like a cat, it's the right size and just about as trustworthy.

Jennifer's used to people feeling uneasy around the beast, and given Aglet's size, she really can't hold his nervousness against him. That said, she can't help but wonder how their current living situation is going to work out if he can't at least get over his fear a little. The Quarkbeast has been very well behaved so far, and she can't imagine it showing more than a passing interest in Aglet - unless the borrower started clanking around in a suit of magnesium armor or something.

"Quarkbeasts are fond of metal," she explains for the nth time with a little shrug. "They have a hard time passing something that smells interesting without sampling it." Arching an eyebrow down at her passenger, she asks, "Can you honestly say you've never borrowed something enticing despite a slim chance a human would notice it was missing?"

"Never ever," quips Aglet untruthfully. "A Borrower only ever takes what won't be missed. I wouldn't put Aunt Euphony in danger like that."

Of course, now that he's said that he's thinking of all those things he did borrow that the Beans later missed -- things, in some cases, that he'd known they would miss, though he's sure (or at least assures himself) that none of it was ever anything they couldn't explain to themselves. Beans are always losing things by putting them down in strange places or letting other Beans use them.
