Encampment Under the Sea [Open to All]

Since the dreamers of Manhattan had such a lovely time at the last vaguely-nautical-themed party, the Rift has decided to step things up a notch. Tonight, the dreamers will find themselves in what appears to be a city very much like the one they inhabit in the waking world, full of towering skyscrapers, neon signs, and heavy traffic. But there is one rather crucial difference: this city is located deep underwater, and the aforementioned traffic is mostly whales and fish, with the occasional submersible thrown into the mix.

The walls and windows are heavily reinforced to withstand the pressure of the water outside, and the people who dwell in these buildings seem to be doing rather well for themselves, for the most part. Buildings are connected by enclosed walkways, so barring any horrible accidents, the dreamers should have no problem getting around without getting too wet.

Much like the city they inhabit in the waking world, some areas are more obviously affluent than others, and the dreamers are as likely to stumble upon an upscale club as an underwater pub. But while the chances of a full structural breakdown are slim, there are definitely some areas that are on the leaky side, and a general sense of claustrophobia pervades the city wherever you might find yourself.

Explore. Or, if you're feeling particularly ambitious, attempt to escape. Either way, take care - it's hard to say what might be lurking in the darkness just beyond the city lights.

Peter follows more slowly, keeping his distance though he comes close enough to continue to hold this conversation. He stays standing for now, hands shoved deep in his pockets, and watches her like he's trying to decide if she really does bite.

"How long have you been here?" he asks after a silence that stretches just long enough to be awkward. It's the standard question, isn't it? Not a very informative or useful one, but he doesn't know what else to ask.

"Not very long," she says, stretching her legs out before her. Her feet are still a little cold from having been in water, but fortunately she's starting to warm up now. "Only, let's see... just about a month, I think." He seems to a bit lost with this introductory process, so she decides to help him out. "Before that I lived in a world a lot like this one - when we're awake I mean, not like this. I grew up in Alabama with my momma and my granddaddy, and I kept bees, just like I do now."

She smiles encouragingly up at him. "What do you like to do?" she asks. "My sense is structural, not... detailed."

"What do I like to do," repeats Peter as if he's never really considered the question. What he likes to do is drink and fuck, but he's already feeling more than a little pathetic without admitting that the former is largely what he's got going for him. In his defense, those aren't really the only things. "I'm an illusionist," he informs her. "Had a show in Vegas before all this, think it's fair to say I liked that."

Well, and she'd already figured out the drinking. She brightens when he answers, grinning excitedly. "Oh cool!" she say without an ounce of irony. "I'd love to see you do that - are you still doing it here? I mean... do you want to?" Congratulations, her interest has been doubly piqued.

"I do a little in the park now and then," replies Peter, warming to the topic now that she's gone and looked all impressed by it. He hasn't been busking all that much lately, though...but there's a rather better thing to brag about now. "Going to have a stage show in September. I'm still writing it, but we've got the backing."

We. That almost makes it sound like a legitimate production instead of Gabe fronting him the money and the angel-power to strong-arm a show into existence.

"Great!" Bee all but claps her hands at this. "That's so exciting, Peter! I'm looking forward to it."

She looks up at him for a moment longer, then sheepishly pats the floor beside her. "Are you sure you don't want to sit?" she says.

"You've never even seen the bullshit I do," Peter points out, finally losing some of his flinty edge as he lets out a brief chuckle. Less reluctantly than he would have expected a few minutes ago, he lowers himself to the floor. "It is going to be amazing, though."

Bee grins happily when he sits, and pulls her knees up before her, looping her arms around them.

"It'll be even more of a surprise since I don't know what to expect," she points out. "I haven't gone to see a magic show since I was a kid. I bet this isn't gonna be like anything I would have seen back then, though." She looks over at him hopefully, really enjoying this rapport they've got going, even if it's just for the present. She knew he had it in him.

Peter makes a short, amused sound. "Not if you had good parents," he agrees. "There's a reason I never did birthday parties, even if the money's not as bad as you'd think."

No, Vegas had always been more his speed. For all that he bullshitted about being put upon when the Hard Rock approached him to set up shop with them, it had been a dream come true.

"Well." She decides to take a chance, scooting closer and looping her arm through his to lean against him. "I'm really excited to see it. Definitely let me know when that's happen." She looks up at him. "Can I come visit you again, when we're both awake? I may not look it but I'm a pretty good drinking buddy."

Peter stiffens at the unexpected familiarity (though is it really so unexpected after the way she's acted thus far?), but he doesn't scoot away or move to get up. He just sits there feeling unjustifiably tense and trying to decide if she's coming on to him. She's got to be, he decides. "Your place might be better," he points out. "Unless that's full of bees, too."

"No," she giggles. "Just books. That'd be fine. I'm on the 18th floor."

She feels pretty satisfied with herself right now. Of course she might feel a bit more awkward if she knew what Peter thought she was doing, but she can't read patterns in dreams.

"I'll see you soon, then," she says firmly.
